A Day of Connection and Play: Spirit North PArtners Experience Indigenous Culture

Under the brilliant Toronto sun, a group of Spirit North donors and friends gathered at Eglinton Park for an unforgettable day immersing in the fun and challenges that Indigenous youth experience through Spirit North’s programs. This special event provided a unique opportunity to learn, engage, and connect through traditional games and storytelling, creating a deeper understanding of the impact of Spirit North’s work with Indigenous communities and youth.

A sense of pride and connection was palpable as participants assembled their own sacred tobacco pouches to take home, carrying a piece of the day with them.

The day’s activities were led by our incredible Eastern Canada Programs team—Jordi, Finn, Kyaana, and Jayden—who delivered an exceptional Sports Day for our valued donors. Traditional northern games, such as Stick Pull and Back Push, sparked playful competition and camaraderie among the group, while reinforcing the physical and mental resilience fostered through Indigenous games.

A highlight of the event was the storytelling session with Jordi Jacko, Spirit North’s Regional Director for Eastern Canada, who captivated the group with the tale of Nanabush, leaving participants with a stronger connection to Indigenous teachings.

Many expressed their gratitude for the experience, eager to learn more about how Spirit North engages with Indigenous children and communities. The presence of our CEO Gary St Amand and Founder Beckie Scott further enriched the day..

We would also like to extend our thanks to the corporate donors who joined us on St. Patrick’s Island for our first ever Sports Day in the city where we gave this concept a trial run on September 16th, 2024.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in both these events—your dedication and participation make these events truly special. From the knowledge and wisdom shared to the fun and care infused into every moment, these Sports Days have strengthened our bonds and deepened our commitment to the children and communities we serve.
